ANNUAL REPORT [For the year ended March 31 2008]
Click here to see the report (French only).

The reusable garment and accessories sector is growing steadily and represents nearly 45% of Certex throughput and 75% of turnover. The clothes sold for reuse are usually first or second quality. More than ninety-five percent of reuse sales go to the used clothing export market.

About 15% of throughput is processed into recycled material industrial rags. This is our secondary line of business. Rags are sold in 12 categories, depending on whites, colours, and fibers. All sales of industrial rags are in Quebec and across Canada.

Finally, 25% of throughput is sold to companies specializing in textile shredding and recycling of recovered materials and fibers. Of limited commercial value, we see this as a by-product of our production process.

In addition, Certex occasionally sells unsorted bags to other textile recycling centers in Canada and elsewhere, when supply surplus exceeds our processing capacity.

Numbers speak for themselves

Located in St-Hubert, the sorting and recycling centre is the largest facility of its kind in Quebec.

Certex provides employment to:

  • 140 employees, of whom more than 60% have functional limitations.

Certex sorts:

  • 120 tons of clothing, shoes and textiles per week, equivalent to 6,000 tons per year.

This volume can be broken down as follows:

  • 45% is exported as garments, shoes and textiles for reuse (Grade #1 and #2)
  • 15% is used in the manufacture of rags made from recycled material
  • 25% is sold as raw material to companies
  • 15% of the total volume is rejected as not economically recoverable

Certex annually recycles:

  • 5,000 tons of used clothing, shoes and textiles directly donated by individuals or from surplus produced by other waste sorting and recovering or used clothing organizations.
  • 1,000 tons of surplus from chain stores and manufacturers producing or using textile materials.

Who buys items recovered by CERTEX?

  • Africa and South America buy used clothes, shoes and textiles for reuse.
  • Surpluses are sold for export to non-NAFTA countries.
  • Industrial rags and raw materials used to manufacture recycled fiber are mainly sold in Canada.
